Harvey de SOUZA (violin)

A native of Mumbai, India, Harvey began his musical studies at the age of four under the tutelage of his father. He was awarded a scholarship to attend the Yehudi Menuhin School in England where he studied with Yehudi Menuhin, Felix Andrievsky and Margaret Norris. Harvey was a prizewinner in the Royal Over-Seas League Competition, and was a recipient of awards from the Royal Society of Arts, the Martin Musical Foundation and the Inlaks Foundation. He went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied with Jascha Brodsky and Felix Galamir. He has also taken part in several masterclasses with Nathan Milstein, Isaac Stern, Josef Gingold and Franco Gulli.

Harvey has performed extensively in Europe, the U.S. and the Far East. He has participated in numerous festivals including Salzburg, Sienna, Gstaad, Santa Fe, MMCJ in Japan and Prussia Cove in England. He has performed regularly with Joshua Bell, Steven Isserlis, Julia Fischer, Janine Jansens and Julian Rachlin. Harvey has been a member of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, and a member of the Vellinger String Quartet, who were winners of the 1994 London International String Quartet Competition. Harvey is currently co-leader of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and a member of the Academy’s chamber ensemble with whom he has performed extensively throughout South America, Europe and USA. He has been principle guest director of the Lancashire Sinfonietta, and is a founder and current Artistic Director of the Sangat Chamber Music festival, now in its sixteenth year, in Mumbai, India.
